An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Linux Systems Administrator based at our offices ineither Plymouth or Exeter.You will be working in a dynamic environment; designing, deploying and supporting infrastructure services that form part of the UK’sCritical National Infrastructure. The team maintains a large number of Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers hosted on VMware ESXi.

If you are offered a position, you will be required to complete and provide a satisfactory basic DBS check that shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions. In addition, due to the sensitive nature of some of our roles, you may be required to undergoa National Security Vetting (Security Check).If these additional security checks are required and to meet National Security Vetting requirements, you will need to evidence that you have resided in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.

Main Responsibilities Responsibilities include hardware specification and system architecture, deployment and ongoing support of servers and services. You will be exposed to a variety of database platforms, Active Directory integrations, firewalls, TCP/IP and Fibre-Channel networking.

The following skills and qualifications would be beneficial, although not essential:

  • Linux core administrative skills
  • An understanding of system security and how to harden a server/service
  • DevOps experience (e.g. Ansible, git, CI/CD, REST APIs)
  • Containerisation (Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, Docker)
  • Software development skills: bash scripting and Python. Other high-level language experience would be advantageous.
  • An IT qualification or equivalent accreditations.

As a member of the team, you will be expected to participate in a compensated Out of Hours standby working arrangement and may be required to work overtime. As the team supports multiple WPD sites, a driving licence is required.
