To learn more about Convatec, please visit Job SummaryThe Senior Packaging Development Engineer will serve as a global subject-matter expert in packaging engineering focused on design and development of primary, sterile-barrier packaging for new products. The successful candidate will be responsible for primary packaging design, packaging materials selection, and development and validation of packaging process technology. Situated within the global Process Development Capability Centre (Deeside) on a Hybrid basis, the Senior Packaging Development Engineer will support new product development and significant changes to existing products within any of Convatec’s four business units. The successful candidate will ensure on-time project delivery, driving innovation and collaborating within a cross functional, multidisciplinary team. They will embrace and drive Convatec’s core mission, values and priorities, work to advance the business units’ strategies, while ensuring consistent engineering practices.The successful candidate will:Demonstrate a breadth of experience in primary, sterile-barrier packaging design for medical device, biotech, pharmaceutical or equivalent industries.Have a working knowledge and application of industry standards in packaging design and test methods (ISO, ASTM and ISTA standards)Demonstrate a functional knowledge of packaging test equipment, packaging regulations, and packaging process technology.Be responsible to specify process technologies and deliver processes capable of manufacturing product to the highest quality standards in an efficient, cost-effective manner.Report directly to the Associate Director of Process DevelopmentWork in partnership with R&D, Advanced Operation (AO), , Operations, Marketing, Quality, Regulatory and PMO teams along with external development and manufacturing partnersDuties and ResponsibilitiesLead the design and development of sterile primary packaging systems for new products, from conceptualization through to commercialization.Select primary packaging materials considering inputs such as design for sterilization, sustainability, and cost targetsSuggest primary packaging designs that align with Marketing requirements and User-Centered Design principles, as well as operational requirements and secondary/tertiary packaging requirementsProvide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) inputs to the R&D teams throughout the product design phase.Collaborate with R&D to ensure system level requirements for final product design are developed and verified in accordance with design control procedures.Recommend and qualify new packaging materials and suppliers.Provide technical expertise in the development of component specification for packaging systems.Recommend new packaging equipment vendors and external packaging partners.Maintain familiarity to evolving regulatory developments in sustainable packaging to address future requirements proactively.Collaborate with AO and external vendors, to carry out development trials to assess materials and processes.Support R&D with manufacture of samples for design control activities.Use statistical methods and analysis to help design and characterize processes with reduced variability.Develop and manage relationships with equipment, technology, and service partners effectively.Compile and deliver regular updates on assigned projects to business stakeholders.Deliver technical and commercial evaluation and approval of vendor proposals for equipment and technology.Adopt engineering standards and best practices driven from the PDCC, promote as a role model through all engineering functions in the franchise.Manage self / assigned team’s workload, coach and develop team members to maximize their development.About YouYou’ll be degree qualified in Packaging Engineering, other Engineering fields, Materials Science or equivalent experience.Proactive and innovative individual with interpersonal skills and a good team playerDemonstrable experience working with R&D teams to deliver manufacturing solutions for new products development.Experience of managing process optimization and demonstrated expertise in problem solving.Effective communication skills and able to communicate and present appropriately both written and orally through all levels in the organization.Understanding of DFM, six sigma and lean methodologiesDemonstrated Project Management skills, including a track record of creating plans and meeting deadlines.Working ConditionsThis is a hybrid office-based role within the Deeside UK PDCC Hub. Expectations are that the candidate is in Deeside for 2-3 days per week.Significant periods of time spent in a manufacturing/clean room environment.Travel RequirementsBusiness critical travel will be required to support technology assessment, process trials, vendor assessments and transition into manufacture.
