The Head of Management Accounts role is an exciting opportunity to be impactful in a small finance team and support the Charity Commission to achieve its objectives. We are looking for someone with excellent technical, analytical and communication skills.

In this role, you will have responsibility for running the Management Accounts team and for ensuring that all advice given to the Assistant Director and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) is technically sound, compliant and helps to inform strategic decision making.

A key requirement of the role is to proactively identify and manage cross-Commission financial risks, mitigation and opportunities through analysis of management information from the Management Accounts team.

You will report directly to the Assistant Director of Finance & Commercial who in turn reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

Job description :

  • Highly visible across a number of Directorates, working to increase financial capability and ensure that senior managers understand and are challenged about their use of resources to meet business objectives.
  • Support the development of realistic budgets for Directorates which are based on operational plans and ensure that all resource needs are identified.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior budget holders to agree forecasts which highlight significant financial risks and opportunities early and provide advice to ensure that risks and opportunities are fully understood so that mitigating decisions are taken.
  • Ensuring that financial reports to senior management highlight key insights in a meaningful and understandable way. Translating and adding financial insight to financial data to provide clear information and evidence.
  • The key operational finance lead in the production of Directorate business plans providing expert advice in relation to business planning.
  • Contributing to the development of business cases and track and report delivery of planned financial costs.
  • Play a key role in the Spending Review process, providing expert advice, analysis and creative input to inform the Commission’s submission.
  • Maintaining excellent relationships with external auditors - working with the Head of Financial Accounts to lead our response to the annual audit using high levels of negotiating, consulting and interpersonal skills to achieve co-operation over mutually acceptable solutions.

Person specification :

  • Good awareness of UK accounting standard.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical skills, the ability to understand the drivers of business performance, identifying trends and opportunities to improve business and/or finance outcomes.
  • A proven ability to work with senior colleagues to deliver improved performance, underpinned by excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to present information clearly.
  • Adaptable and willing to review role and priorities with senior management team to meet the current and future needs of the organisation.
  • Working in a finance team or function, with relevant Finance Business Partnering or Management Accounting experience.
  • Good understanding of the importance of handling information sensitively - in line with data protection requirements.
  • Accurate and relevant record management skills and practical IT and office skills, including Microsoft Office.
  • Qualified or at least part Qualified through CIMA, CIPFA, ACCA or ICAEW, or equivalent - willing to work towards full qualification and significant relevant experience.
  • Proficient in Excel.
  • Strong technical budgeting and accounting skills to ensure Treasury financial reporting requirements and International Accounting Standards are applied correctly.
  • Good research, analytical and judgement skills - to evaluate complex information, support and own unbiased decisions, and demonstrate accountability.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and expand professional knowledge and understanding of the range of our systems and processes.
